Client Context & Operational Challenge
A public-sector health communications program expanding into underserved language communities across East Africa and the Horn of Africa needed translated, culturally adapted, and community-approved health education materials — including printed guides, audio scripts, and field-worker training documents — in six languages where no published health terminology or reference materials existed.
Execution & Governance Model
Structured in three stages. Stage 1 (Terminology Construction): assembled 2–3 native speaker working groups per language with health sector or community education backgrounds to develop target-language equivalents for medical concepts, validated by broader panels. Stage 2 (Translation & Cultural Adaptation): translation by qualified native speakers using new terminology registers, followed by a separate cultural adaptation review focused on register, tone, and community acceptability — with authority to restructure content beyond linguistic correction. Stage 3 (Community Validation): completed materials shared with community health workers and local educators for structured feedback on clarity, cultural acceptability, and perceived accuracy. Contributors for the two most constrained languages sourced through health NGO networks operating in-region.

- All 6 languages delivered within the 5-week program window meeting seasonal campaign deadlines. Over 85,000 words translated, culturally adapted, and community-validated. Terminology registers created from scratch for 4 languages, now maintained as reusable assets. Community validation pass rate exceeded 95% on first submission. Final revision requests remained below 2%. Client expanded scope to 3 additional languages in the following quarter using the contributor networks and terminology assets built during this engagement.
